J. P. CURRAN CHURCH, general grocer, was born in Rush, Genesee County, N. Y., Dec. 4, 1834. He came with his parents to Marengo, Calhoun County, Mi, in September, 1836. In September, 1850, he went west and south, and at the breaking out of the rebellion, he left the Appe tl office in Memphis, Tenn., and returned to Michigan.

In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company H, Seventeenth Michigan Infantry, and was commissioned a first lieutenant. 'He first met the enemy in the battle of South Mountain, next at Antietam, and still later at Fredericksburg, and in various minor conflicts.
