ARCHIBALD K. DOUGHERTY

Representative from the counties of Antrim, Charlevoix, and Manitou in 1887, was born in St. John, New Brunswick, June 26, 1835. His education was limited. He became apprenticed to learn the trade of a ship-builder, and has followed it as his principal occupation since. In 1868 removed to Charlevoix, Michigan. In 1876 he located in Elk Rapids, where he has during the past ten years been foreman in the shipyard of the Elk Rapids iron company. He held the office of supervisor three years, and has been eight times in succession elected township clerk of Elk Rapids. As the republican candidate he received 1,098 votes to 769 for Horatio B. Lewis, Fusionist.

ARCHIBALD K. DOUGHERTY, ship builder, was born in St. John, New Brunswick, June 26, 1834. He spent his youth and learned his trade in his native country. On June 27, 1858, he was married to Miss Mary M. Seely, also of New Brunswick. She was born there in 1837. Their children are Bessie, Andrew, Mary, Kate, Lottie E. and Lucy Louise. After spending some time in Maine, Massachusetts and Maryland Mr. Dougherty came from St. John to Charlevoix, Michigan, in November 1868, and engaged in his former occupation. He also purchased village property in that place, which he still holds.

He and his family after residing there seven years removed to Elk Rapids, where they now reside.

In Charlevoix, Mr. Dougherty was supervisor three years, and is now serving his fourth term, as clerk of Elk Rapids Township. He gave the first dramatic performance ever given in Charlevoix. He is now foreman in the ship yard of the Elk Rapids Iron Company. He superintends the building of their lighters, and the repairing of their floating property.
